Our Passover Lamb

Power of His Resurrection

Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are

unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

1Corinthians. 5:7

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:29

Exodus 12:21-27; Luke 22:21-23 1 Cor. 5:7; John 1:29

The period of the Passover Celebrations (aka Easter) was the most dramatic time for the salvation of all human kind. During this time, that which had already been in the mind of God, the emancipation of people, would be enacted practically, in bodily form by Jesus of Nazareth. Positionally and eternally, the Christ had already fulfilled the work of redemption for he, the Lamb, was slain in time past before the earth as formed. For the Word states that And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world“(Rev 13:8 KJV).

At this time, the noblest of men that ever lived would be exchanged for a thief and he would die a horrible death. Hell would receive a candidate like no other. With his entry hell experienced a cataclysmic impact. Despite carrying the sin of the world, hell failed to contain him. His entry into hell had heaven’s attention. Instead of capturing him, Jesus’ spirit rose and escaped the chains of death. By his resurrected spirit, Jesus went into the heavenly tabernacle and presented his blood and as symbol of his Finished Work. This was a period whose impact was felt in Heaven, on Earth and in Hell. A weekend like none other.

Passover Feast (Exodus 12)

  • Passover Feast was a meal eaten with special instructions to all Israelites living in the Goshen Valley as part of the tenth Plague God unleashed on Egypt.
  • Every household had to keep a lamb of at least one year old. On the 10th of Nisan, the Lamb was to be inspected and cleaned. On this special Day, the 15th of Nisan (or Abib) the lamb would be slaughtered at 3Pm and be part of the evening meal;
  • It was a meal eaten with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. The lamb was not to have any of its bones broken. It was to be wholly consumed in one night. They ate the meal in haste, with their clothes dressed for travel.
  • The blood from the Lamb was sprinkled using hyssop on the door posts of every Israelite believing family dwelling house.
  • That night God, through the Angel of Death, judged Egypt with the death of firstborns of all humans and domesticated animals that were not specially safeguarded.
  • The Angel Passed Over the houses safeguarded by the blood. Thus, the name Passover
  • The Passover Meal was eaten on the evening, which is essentially the eve of the week of the unleavened Bread celebration. This week runs for the next seven (7) days making the total of eight days. The Unleavened Bread Celebrations, for one week. signified a demand for a sanctified life (Exodus 34:18-24; Luke 22:1). The names were interchangeably used.
  • The Passover Feast was one of the three pilgrimage feasts; the other two being the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), and the Feast of Tabernacles.
  • Jews still celebrate it. Jesus abolished it for him became the Passover Lamb who was to be slain once and for all. On the 10th of Nisan enter Jerusalem on a foal of a Donkey. He was seen, inspected by the public.

Lords Table (Holy Communion Luke 22: 1-23)

  • The Lords Table, Holy Communion, is the meal that Christian partake of as regular ordinance to remember the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • The Christian Faith calls it Last Supper, Holy Communion or Eucharist (Gk, Thanksgiving)
  • It is obvious that Jesus used to celebrate the Passover Meals with his family when he was young and now with his Disciples when he was a travelling preacher.
  • The Disciples asked him where he would have it this eventful Year. He sends Peter and John to secure lodging and gives them instruction about the hosting of the Passover Meal.
  • When Jesus ate, it as his last Passover he radically changed into something that represented him. On its original meaning, he superimposed his meaning.
  • At the beginning of the meal Jesus expresses how he longed for this Last Pass Over. He told them that the he desired earnestly Luk 22:15  And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. He knew the suffering that was about to come and, in a few hours, he would be the Passover Lamb.
  • He was emotional about this. Later on, in the night when he would pray in the Garden of Getsemani, he would be so intense that capillaries would burst in the sweat glands and he would sweat blood.
  • Jesus said that he would never again eat of the Pass Over until is fulfilled in the Kingdom. It is likely that when we gather around the table in the future, in the millennial Kingdom there will be another celebration (Luke 22: 16, 18).
  • This is in essence is the Last Pass Over feast. Luk 22:18  For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. God instituted it in Exodus 12 and now the incarnate God is closing and transitioning it in the Lords Table
  • The Jews do celebrate the Passover up to today, but to Jesus this was to be fulfilled in His death and thus it is now meaningless. It was replaced by the Lords Table. Now everything points no longer to Egypt but to the Cross of Jesus
  • The death of Jesus is not the end for he will rise and come again, therefore now this meal is now only a memorial which we have to do regularly until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:22-27)

Four Truths about Jesus as Our Passover Lamb?

  1. Christ is our Substitute to appease the Wrath of God
  1. Given for You: Words that stands for substitutionary death
  2. Sacrificing the innocent for the guilty
  3. You escape death or judgment by death of an innocent one. The animal was innocent but took the sin of the wicked and guilt.
  4. The Passover Lamb carried the penalty of the wrath of God.
  5. In Christ justice has been satisfied. 2 Cor. 5: 21 clearly states that God made him to be Sin, so that I may become the righteousness of God. God treated him as if he lived my life and he treats me as If I live Christs life.

  1. By His Death, we are Delivered from Satan’s Captivity
  1. The Passover Lamb ensured their deliverance from Egypt, but Jesus the Greater Passover Lamb of God delivers us from the yoke of Sin
  2. Passover granted freedom from Egypt. However, Jesus grants us the freedom of soul from any form of Guilt, burden, addition and pain
  3. He grants deliverance from any form of captivity

  1. His Shed Blood Cleanses and Forgives every Sin
  1. The Passover Lamb of Egypt did not produce the forgiveness of personal Sin; However, the blood of Jesus communicates
  2. Through the Shedding of blood, there is the forgiveness of Sins

  1. Christ Our Passover Institutes a new Covenant through His Blood
  1. Covenants were ratified by blood (death). The Old Covenant God enacted with Moses was ratified by Blood sprinkled on the whole community as they sat by Mount Sinai
  2. Jesus started a new covenant spoken of in Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36.
  3. The New Covenant, also known as His Will, is a Covenant of Salvation (Heb. 9:15-22)
  4. It is a Covenant where God forgives Sinners exchanged with the Death of Jesus.
  5. With this exchange, the Passover Meal becomes radically changed with the meaning of Jesus Death Burial and Resurrection
