The Necessity of Surrendered Will
Key verses: Mark 14: 32:42
Key thought: One important key that unlocks the fulfillment of God’s purposes in our lives is a surrendered will.
A surrendered will is one that is willfully aligned to God’s will. The will or power of choice is one power distinguishing trait that God gave man.
The spheres in which we interact with God’s will
- Performance will
- This is the sphere where God does what He desires and He alone can do. There is nothing that we can do about this but submit but just realign to His will.
- The creation of the world is part of the performance will of God that we cannot do anything about it.
- So, Jesus as He prays, he asks if the cup to be taken away form Him, but says not as wills but as the Father wills.
- Prescriptive will
- This is the sphere where God has what He desires but allows us to choose.
- This is where we need to be careful as mainly life happens in this sphere, we must allow the Holy Spirit to direct us and we must have the readiness to obey.
- The flesh, the world systems and the devil himself are always fighting against us in this sphere so that we walk in disobedience.
- We have a much bigger say in this sphere, this is where Jesus says not my will but your will.
- Permissive will
- In this sphere we have what people desire and God allows it. Jesus as an obedient son did only what the father wanted Him to do
- If we are avoid stepping in this sphere then we need to fully submit to his will and counsel.
- Jesus as He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane operated only in line with the performance and prescriptive will of God
- The devil will always try to subvert God’s purposes over our lives
- The triad of evil at work is always fighting so that we can conduct ourselves outside the will.
- The mind will play tricks on you when God is about to lift you, it will tell you just quit!
- At a place where God is about to usher a new season the mind and you are being opposed or tempted, the devil will always try to drive you away from God’s agenda.
- The fulfilment of God’s purposes may be birthed through distress and many other kinds of opposition
Mar 14:33 and he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 and he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” - God’s word is sure foundation when it comes to realigning our will to God’s will.
- The passage demonstrates the humanity of Jesus, Jesus was in agony with the burden he was about to carry because humanity’s sin
- Accepting God’s will over our will is a catalyst for prophetic fulfilment
- Having a sense of purpose over our lives is important as it helps us
- Purpose is more important than feelings, feelings can deceive and are temporary.
- God’s will and purposes may not make sense when put in the perspective of emotions
Mark 14:36 and he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” - The cup symbolized the suffering He was about to go through yet in spite of the agony He wanted it done in the Father’s will
- He acknowledges that all things are possible with God, in other words God could have saved humanity in other ways yet God’s will had to be done.
- There is peace and victory in aligning our will towards God’s will.
- Prayer cover is indispensable on the path of destiny fulfillment
- Prayer is weapon to overcome temptation to subvert the will of God. Jesus told them to watch and pray.
- The flesh is one setback to prayer, the spirit willing but the flesh is many times weak.
- So even if you don’t feel like praying, pray! Even when you are frustrated pray!
- Prayer is what sustained Jesus through the whole process of his suffering up to the death on the cross
Mat 26:41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” - He was in prayer, constant communion with the father.
- Prayer cover is important, but it is not a substitute of our personal devotion. There is a limit to which people can stand with us in prayer.
