Beyond The Amen

Recap on rewriting the script

Our script is how we have been programmed based on the things we see or have gone through and these determine how we interact with God, his word and our communities. If we are not intentional about identifying the scripts we use, they  limit us from fully living and experiencing the abundant life in Christ and the transformation that comes by the word.

Today we continue to what we do next once we start editing those scripts how now we can live the new scripts in our day to day lives?

This is by the holy spirit who gives us power to live these scripts in our ordinary lives.

John 16:5-15

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. '

John 16:7

Jesus said that it was advantageous for him to go so he can send the holy spirit to walk along side us, we benefit more from having the holy spirit in this walk as believers.
Because Jesus being physically present was limited to the geographical area that he was in, he had limitations by the body. But the holy spirit is not limited to time and space, he is able to meet us in our different places, at any time at anywhere

  1. The holy spirit, he is God, so he is omnipresent, Omniscient, omnipotent.
  2. The holy spirit is an active agent of divine transformation

Active agent - Not a passive force, a mere feeling, or an abstract concept, but the personal, dynamic presence of God working continually within believers to change them from the inside out

Often times because we are not able to fully visualize and understand the holy spirit with our minds, we only see him as just an idea, or just something, or a force or a power. We limit him to the goosebumps we feel, or tongues or his manifestations in a service

The advantage Jesus talked about goes beyond just having him as a special event, holy ghost encounter service or just a visitor we welcome at the beginning of the service, rather he was promised to us that he will abide with us forever. He is a resident who goes where we go.

These experiences with the holy spirit through manifestations, prophecies, or miracles are mostly a small portion of our lives. Maybe only the 2 hours of the 168 hours we have in a week. Meaning if the holy spirit was only for church then we are effectively alone over 99% of our lives. But Jesus said he is to be with us forever, so what is he for?

Church is a place where we are equipped but our daily lives is were we live out the life of God. So if the holy spirit is to be of any benefit to us we need to engage him in the “ordinary things” we do. Beyond Sunday service, Beyond the Amen.

We can not just limit his power and his giftings but we must know his nature, because it is his nature that makes him compatible with our day to day routine.

  1. He is the promise that was sent to help us.  (John 14:16)
    1. Jesus promised that the holy spirit will dwell in us and not just visit. He is the whisper in our ear during the actual performance of life.
    2. The holy spirit is there to help us through our everyday life, through our decision making, the small and the big decisions.
  2. He is the ultimate teacher (John 14:26)
    1. He doesn’t just teach theology but he teaches us life.
    2. He will teach you everything you don’t know
    3. The holy spirit is able to translate God’s character into your context, he takes the vastness of God and makes it practical. He teaches you how to apply the word in the normal life setting
    4. He teaches when to speak or when not to speak. He changes the stubborn scripts by helping you rebuild your character from the inside out
  3. He is our Reminder (John 14:26)
    1. The holy spirit acts us our divine memory.
    2. He isn't looking for you to "act" like a Christian; He is looking to live through you as a Christian.
  4. He is our guide (John 16:13)
    1. There is misinformation, office politics, people having hidden agendas and the holy spirit brings insight to be able to see between the lines. He is the spirit of all truth so he is able to guide us into all truths.
    2. He gives us discernment to sense when something doesn’t seem right.
  5. He is our intercessor (Rom 8:26)
    1. He carries our burden when are weak, or are weighed down by issues of life.
    2. The spirit himself makes intercession for us, he prays for us. He uses those messy unspoken feelings of exhaustion and worry and translates them into a perfect petition before the father.
  6. He is our wisdom
    1. The holy spirit other characteristic is wisdom, he is a spirit of wisdom.
    2. The holy spirit alerts us before we are in danger. He acts as our guardrail that prevents us from falling over.
    3. His leading from the dimension of wisdom may not be popular opinion to most. Sometimes his convictions may not make sense to us and even to those that are around us but its only after a passage of time it makes sense.
    4. Sometimes the leading of the holy spirit may take us away from what is socially acceptable.
    5. The promptings of the holy spirit are the things that strengthen our christian walk and make our individual walk personal.

The Promptings of the holy spirit

  1. They come in the most gentle ways or as a still small voice. He will not shout or force it on us rather he gives us a gentle nudge.
  2. If we are not intentional of getting out of the noise and involving the holy spirit in our day to day life we miss the voice.
  3. The more you respond to these small nudges  through increased attention and repetition the clearer his voice becomes to you and you become confident to hearing his voice
  4. Because of his gentle nature, he waits for an invitation to speak into our daily lives rather than forcing his way in.

What does involving the holy spirit in our daily lives look like?

  1. Acknowledge him in your day as your helper, your guide, at the beginning of your day.
  2. Consult him, not only when there is an emergency but even when things are normal
  3. Recognize his nudges and yield to them (practice makes perfect)

We should cherish more moments we adhere to his leading more than the moments of supernatural encounter. Because obedience is what brings transformation
