Intentional Worship

Go and Make Disciples

Nehemiah 12; 1 Chronicles 16: 8-36

Recurrent Thought

Worship is intentional. There is a purpose to Worship; We worship God because he is worth of it and deserves it.

A Life of a Christ-devoted follower is sustained by the Knowledge, understanding and wisdom that is generated and anchored by the relationship with God. Worship, which is a feature of one’s relationship with God, is a demonstration of their connection and loyalty to God. Nehemiah 12 presents one of the most beautiful pictures of organized worship in the Old Testament. After the wall was rebuilt, the people did not rush into celebration but they organized a structured worship service that honored God. (Neh. 12:27). One big lesson this teaches us is that worship must be both spiritual and structured. The praise and worship described in Nehemiah 12, marking the dedication of the rebuilt Jerusalem wall, is a powerful, organized, and joyous celebration that acts as a spiritual culmination to the physical restoration of the city. It serves as a testimony of God’s faithfulness, moving from ruin to active worship and transforming a once-mocked structure into a platform for praise.

Background and Outline

  • A record of Priests and Levites (12:1-26)
  • Dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem (12: 27-43)
  • The Sacred Administration at the Temple (12:44-47)

The Praise Procession during the dedication provides us with Six Truths for Authentic Worship

1.Worship is an acknowledgment of God’s Attributes (Personhood, Being)

  • Worship is a recognition that the God we worship is the Lord of All (1 Chron. 16:8, 10, 14, 23, 25-29, 34-36)
  • Worship is the glorification of His Name (1 Chron. 16:10)
  • Worship is standing in Awe of His Splendor, Majesty and Holiness (1 Chron. 16:27,29)
  • Worship is ascribing (attributing) to Him that which He is already:  Glory, Strength, Splendor, etc (16: 28, 29).
  • Therefore, Make it a habit to describe the Lord based on His personhood, nature and acts.
  • Worship is useless when God is not enthroned as Lord of All in our lives. He is the one who deserves all our homage, reverence and worship.

2.Worship is a Celebration of God’s Acts in the Earth (1 Chron. 16)

Intimate worship is a celebration of God’s acts in the created order (Universe)

  • Worship is making known God’s deeds among the Peoples (1 Chron. 16:8).
  • Worship is an event in which we tell God’s Wondrous works (16:9, 12)
  • Worship is standing before the God of Miracles and Judgments (16:12)
  • Worship is a reflection on his everlasting Covenant with His people (16:15-17)
  • Worship is an appreciation of God, the great defender of our Lives (16:21-22)

3. Worship Demands Spiritual Readiness

  • Every effective worship service begins with spiritual preparation. The major preparation is cleansing before Worship service. In Neh. 12:30 the Priests and Levites purified themselves before the Worship service. Clean hands lead in holy worship. It is essential that we get ready in confessing our sins and brokenness before the Lord.
  • We must be deliberate in seeking God before entering the Worship service. God is honored when His people prepare themselves before they worship Him. Notice that before any celebration, there was cleansing. Worship begins with holiness. Where there is no purity, there is no power in worship. We must Examine our lives and confess our sins before approaching God (Psalm 24:3-4).

Purity Before Praise is not legalism; it is an essential preparation for worship.

Before the procession, the priests and Levites purified themselves, the people, the gates, and the wall (Nehemiah 12:30). This signifies that true worship requires holiness and sincere repentance,                              acknowledging that we need God to purify our surroundings and hearts.

  • Readiness to Worship includes organizing for Worship (Nehemiah 12:27–29) The Levites were gathered intentionally. Worship was not disorderly. Prepared hearts produce powerful praise. Intentional Worship is supported by clear Structure to our worship Service. Nehemiah organized two large choirs to walk in opposite directions on top of the newly built wall, meeting at the Temple. One going south ward another north ward and they meet at the Temple. This act symbolically "surrounded" the city with praise and consecrated the entire city to God (Neh. 12:31). The two companies were arranged in order. Structured order, eliminates confusion and disorder. Without order, even good intentions become confusion. Unfortunately, people tend believe disorder is feature of spirituality When we structure worship, we invoke God’s anointing (strength)

A church where everyone participates is alive. Worship is not a show; it is participation.

  • Notice the responsibility upon those leading the Worship Service. Leaders first prepared themselves spiritually before leading others. Notice the role of Leaders in organizing the people into two great companies of thanksgiving.  A Worship leader cannot guide others to a place they have not been spiritually.  As a we disciple others, we must understand to teach them in how to worship Yahweh. This was Leader-Led Worship. Nehemiah and Ezra, as leaders, actively participated in leading the procession, modeling that leadership in worship is essential, rather than just overseeing administration.

4. Worship is normally expressed Audibly

  • Worship is usually audible and with visible Praise.  Worship includes Singing (Neh.12:27, 35–36)
  • The joy was "heard far away," indicating that authentic worship is meant to be a public, audible, and contagious testimony to the surrounding world.
  • A well-organized service must involve active and joyful participation. The celebration included men, women, and children, demonstrating that heartfelt worship is for the entire community. It was an inclusion of All.
  • Unfortunately, many don’t sing along for many reasons. Others come from the background where singing was don’t by choir only. Others feel they don’t have a nice voice. But there is a power when we sing. Sing with understanding and sincerity. True worship is visibly and audibly expressed with joy and gratitude. Worship is audible. Many times, silent prayer is not really prayer but mere “thinking.”
  • It is essential that You make your voice become your offering.”
  • Worship is Joyful Praise Nehemiah 12:43 (KJV)
  • It is also critical to understand that Joy come from God and not from circumstances. God is the source of true joy in worship. Worship even in difficult times is not situational but spiritual
  • Worship may be accompanied by Musical Expression Neh. 12:35–36.

In this text we notice that they used instruments: trumpets, cymbals, and songs. Psalm 150 shows that musical instruments are essential for worship. They used instruments and singing to glorify God. Music            prepares the heart for God’s presence. Remember How Prophets would prophesy while instruments were being played. It is essential to know that Music is a language that reaches where words cannot.

5. Worship include Proclaiming Thanks and Praise (Nehemiah 12:31)

  • Worship is a celebration of Gifts from God
  • The text emphasizes that the joy was not self-generated but given by God (Nehemiah 12:43). It was a celebration of God’s faithfulness in providing protection, rather than a mere glorification of human effort.
  • As they worshipped God, they invoked on God’s provisions. Notice that these processionals are called “companies of thanksgiving.”
  • Thanksgiving adds a dimension of sacred attitudes, which is a mindset of reverence, awe, and deep respect, to a worship service. Gratitude transforms ordinary gatherings into sacred moments. Don’t trivialize giving thanks to the Lord; thanksgiving is the foundation of worship. The Bible states that we should Enter His Courts worship with gratitude (Neh. 12:43; Psalm 100:4).
  • When God blesses, joy cannot be hidden. Where God is honored, joy is evident.
  • For you to be free in Worship, learn not suppress your joy in God.

6. Worship is a Lifestyle (Neh. 12: 44-47)

  • The praise procession was followed by the setting up of systems to support the priests and Levites (Nehemiah 12:44-47), indicating that true worship is not a one-time emotional event, but a sustained, daily commitment of stewardship and service.
  • Worship that pleases God continues beyond moments of Praise. It becomes a lifestyle.
  • As a Lifestyle trait, worship is revealed by a dedicated life beyond a moment of joy and praise.
  • Notice that they appointed people to manage offerings and firstfruits. This was a lifestyle of worship. Where your treasure is, your heart follows.
  • Giving is part of worship, therefore do not divorce the two. The Lord expect that we Honor Him with our resources (Proverbs 3:9).
  • True worship does not end with the Celebration service but it continues through faithful living.

Conclusion

Worship, whether for an individual or community demands intentionality.  Structured worship founded on readiness of the heart is the basis of engagement with God.
