Updated Visions
And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach Mark 3:14
Mark 3:13-21; Mathew 28:18-20; Luke 6:12-19; Acts 1:8
Recurrent Thought
Although all Christ-devoted followers must develop their vision to fulfill their purposes in the earth, they must do it under the overarching vision of winning the World for Jesus.
Jesus, a person with a unique birth and upbringing had a vision for the World and has always wanted multiplied helping hands to fulfill it. Thus, as when he launched his ministry, he identified persons with a clear intention of making them his disciples. He informed Peter and Andrew (brothers) of this intention and asked them to follow him; and just within the same vicinity of Lake Galilee, he called two other brothers John and James, with the similar promise of making them into fishers of men (Math. 4:18-21; Luke 5:7-10). Over the following days and weeks, he further identified more men including Philip, Nathanael (John 1:43-51) and Matthew (Math. 9:9) with a clear charge to follow Him. With these invitations, he unfolded the masterplan that unveils God’s eternal love.
The text we investigate today shows Jesus who, after an all-night prayer session, with a focused mind formalizes the selection and putting together a group of twelve men. He sets them apart from many other followers with a purpose of pouring his life, time and effort to prepare them for a worldwide enterprise of preaching the Gospel.
When we look at these texts, Jesus expresses four strategic features of his coming into the World.
- Jesus has a Worldwide Vision (Matthew 28:20-28, Mark 16:15-18; Acts 1: 8)
- His Vision was to see the whole World touched and conquered through the preaching of the Gospel (Math. 28:18-20)
- It is the vision that encompasses the whole world and includes all peoples (Rev. 5:9)
- It was to be fulfilled the process of making and multiplying disciples continuously.
- The Vision was to be accomplished by the power and authority granted to him by God (Math. 28:18-20, Acts 1:8)
- Jesus Identified Disciples as the main transmitters of His Vision (Math. 4: 18; Math. 28:18-20)
- To Jesus the human resource to accomplish his vision was a body of trained followers also called Disciples
- Disciples are those who follow Jesus and learn from him.
- Good Disciples are made through a process of time, instruction, loyalty and obedience
- Disciples are called with a purpose of fishing (calling) others and enlisting them to the worldwide vision of Jesus.
- The Call to be a Disciple is to be involved in a business of winning souls for the kingdom of God.
- The Call to be a Disciple is larger and all-encompassing than that of careers, profits, and life security.
- The Call to be a Disciple demands loyalty, obedience and trust (Followership)
- Disciples are those who also, knowing the magnitude and nature of their work deliberately fellowships with others;
- Jesus formulated and implemented a three-fold Strategy to fulfill the Vision
- Jesus took the whole night in prayer as he was about to launch out the strategy
- The Strategy has three parts to it: Select, Shape (School or Form) and Send
- Winning people to God precedes selection. Before he carefully selected, he first witnessed and proclaimed to them the saving the Grace of God.
- He carefully selected those he wanted. Those he believed had the initial capacities to follow. The initial capacities usually include to be Faithful, available and teachable
- His intentional was to school, shape and form them into disciples. This process of forming took about two and half years.
- He poured his life into them. He spent time with them. He tolerated them. He saw their weaknesses and yet he believed that through his training and empowerment they would be capable disciples;
- His clear goal was to send the disciples to win others for the kingdom. These disciples were to be equipped with skills to select, shape and send others
- His clear goal was to empower them with the power and authority of the Holy Spirit (Math 28:18-20; Acts 1:8)
- Formulating Implementing Strategies for the Vision of Jesus
- Over the Two thousand years various forms implementing strategies have been used with the aim to achieve the world vision of Jesus Christ;
- Churches, Mission organization, Denominations continue to look for a “silver bullet” to finish the job and fulfill the vision of Jesus Christ.
- Most of implementing strategies have worked with limited success. Many of the implementing strategies have limitation because they have created a dichotomy of those who win others on one side, while on the other side you find spectators and cheerleaders.
- One major key to the fulfillment of the Vision is to ensure that all followers of Jesus continuously produce other disciples.
- To fulfill the vision of Jesus, disciples would do well to replicate the Strategy of Select, Shape (school, form) Send.
Super12 Cell System
What is a Super12 System?
A robust and vibrant small group emphasizing evangelism and discipleship. The regular cell system works on the subdivision of a nucleus cell whereas the Super12 Cell is the planting of the cells. Every member is a member of a leader cell and at the same time a leader of a discipleship cell. It is an implementing strategy underscoring Selecting, Shaping and Sending disciples.
