Receiving the Promised Holy Spirit!: Pentecost Sunday

Isa 44:3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land,  and streams on the dry ground.
I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

Isa 44:4 They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams.  NIV

Special Note

Today according to the Christian Calendar is Pentecost Sunday which is Fifty days after the Feast of First Fruits (Easter). The word Pentecost means “50”. It is also the day on which the Holy Spirit alighted on the apostles, causing them to speak in tongues

Isaiah 44:1-5; John 7:37-39

Recurrent Thought

Wherever the Holy Spirit is accepted and flows, He brings life-changing impacts.

The Holy Spirit is present here with us and He desires to work extraordinary things in our lives. He loves to change situations on behalf of His people. The secret to enjoying his great benefits and blessings is in RECOGNIZING AND HONORING His Presence

It is essential that you consciously recognize the role and effectual power of the Holy Spirit in your Christian Walk. Jesus clearly stated that he did not want to leave the disciples as orphans, but he promised the Blessed Holy Spirit. He was to be their perpetual Paraclete, “the one who walks alongside the Christ-devoted follower.

God, through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, desires the best of relationships with you. The significant effect that the Promised Holy Spirit has for you is the fruit of your life: the harvest of a fulfilled life. This does not mean you don’t have difficulties in this world, you do! But with Him you still have a life that is amazingly full of joy and peace.

Background:

When we read this text, we come to realize God’s intention for Israel THERE and THEN; however, we also realize that God wants us to apply the implication of the scriptures for us HERE and NOW.  Then and there, God promised an outpouring of the Spirit to the Children of Israel. Some tend to believe this was fulfilled 700 years later on the day of Pentecost. However, the Promise of the Holy Spirit is also given to the Church. Jesus took a lot of His time teaching the apostles about the importance and roles of the Blessed Holy Spirit. Notice the three agricultural elements: Fields, Floods, and Fruits. You and I are the Fields, He is the Flooding River and when we encounter Him we always bear fruits

Here are Five Truths about the Work of the Holy Spirit in our lives

  1. The Holy Spirit is the Promised Gift given to Children of God
    • There and then it was given to Israel insofar as Israel serves God and is upright;
    • There are Scriptures in the Old Testament that refers to the promised Holy Spirit’s coming
    • However, the promises reach out to Gentiles who will say, “I am the Lord’s,” and submit themselves to the Yahweh of Israel (44:5).
    • This was a prophetic Promise for all peoples Joel 2: 28; Acts 2: 14
    • The Promise is given to those who are far off: in time and distance (Acts 2:39)
    • The Promise is given to all whom the Lord shall call (Acts 2:39)
  2. The Holy Spirit is the Water that Gives Life to its Recipients
The Holy Spirit is likened to water and he does come like Floods (verse 3)
    • Recognize that the parched ground is only satisfied with a drenching from on High.
    • Recognize the emptiness of what we pursue and do without the enriching presence of the Holy Spirit.
    • There are two pictures of the Spirit in this text: Water & Flood.
    • It is not merely a few drops of rain, but the abundant rain, the ample, boundless overflow of His Holy Spirit.
    • Our Prayer should be “Lord flood my soul totally, let me be drenched in your love and grace!”
    • The Holy Spirit comes with the Blessings of the Lord
  3. The Promise Holy Spirit is given to the field that is “thirsty and dry
There are no MAJOR prerequisites to the reception of the Spirit except that one has to be thirsty.
    • The Promise of the Holy Spirit is given to those who are thirsty (John 7:37)
    • The Promise of the Holy Spirit is given to those who do not stop Asking, Seeking, and Knocking (Luke 11: 9-13)
    • Note the field must be cultivated and ready for the Holy Spirit. The same seed on one field comes to nothing, and on another, it produces a hundredfold.
    • Note that the Holy Ghost is affected by the personal qualities of the heart in which He dwells, and the capacity of the soul for spiritual life, power, and blessing. Some seem to be vessels prepared unto glory, and others only for sin and evil.
    • God’s spiritual preparation for the coming of His Spirit is a deep hunger and thirst. Matthew 5:6, states that “blessed are they which hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
    • The best level of preparation for the reception of the Holy Spirit is one’s emptiness.
  4. The Holy Spirit brings refreshing effects in our lives (verse 4)
    • Our Fears Are Taken Away (verse 2). Do not be anxious, He is in control.
    • Our Longing for God Is Satisfied. Thirsty is quenched (verse 3)
    • You will always flourish and "will spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams."
    • He initiates rapid growth in our Lives. “Thriving like well-watered glass.
    • He brings blessings despite the desert lands.
    • He comes that we may affect others: Well watered and stretching as willows flowing by the streams.
  5. The Holy Spirit unleashes Transgenerational Impact (44:3)
The Scriptures that that 2 “I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
    • The blessing of the Holy Spirit is not only to us but to our Children and our Descendants
    • The Revival that God wants us to enjoy is one that affects many generations.

Conclusion

The waters of the Holy Spirit come to thirsty lands and wherever the rivers go life becomes evident

Altar Time

  1. Praying for an increased and permanent state of thirstiness.
  2. Praying for the infilling of the Holy Spirit
