Compassion for Souls

Pursuing the Mission of Jesus

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd Mathew 9:36

Mathew 9: 35-38; Acts 26:18

Recurrent Thought

Compassion for the people you serve is the deepest and endearing connection (attachment, cord) that ties you to them

The Church, the—called out assembly (Gk. Ekklesia)—was established as a community of Christ-devoted followers to replicate what he did while on the earth. Jesus gave his followers the Commission of making disciples of all Nations (Math. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8). As he began the ministry, he selected the twelve (12), taught, equipped and empowered them with one single reason, so that they go do the same work of sharing the Gospel of the Kingdom (Mark 3:13-15). Our work as Christ-devoted followers is to Win Souls and Disciple believers. Being the Community of Jesus is to be a people that follow what he demanded of them.

ICA P40

Starting the 4th Week

Plan 40 is a strategy of Win in which we intentionally, plan and casting Vision in how we win others to Christ

Part of the strategy is to prepare for the eventual teaching (life class) that we conduct to ensure all who are born again receive.

The most basic activity under P40 is Praying for specific peoples for the salvation of their Souls. The Church has asked you to Pray for three names you should deliberately pray for.

As we notice Jesus, it is evident that he did not only demonstrate skills and acumen in presenting the Gospel, He also showed deep and heart-wrenching emotions about his sacrifice and the condition of human reality. These issues of the heart, impacts the Great Commission. The mechanics of winning souls and discipling believers is anchored in our heart’s perception of the people. How we see and feel about the people is the driver of what we do for people. Jesus’ Work was anchored in his Compassion for the people. His preaching and healing ministry were anchored on compassion for frail humanity (Math. 14:14; 20: 34; Luke 7:13).

What is Compassion? Compassion is an empathic understanding and concern for the desperate situation of another and the accompanying desire to act to help them. The Word Compassion connotes deep emotions with the desire to help another. The Word used in Greek refers to the stirring of the inward parts

Mathew 9:35-39, summarizes how Jesus did the ministry anchored in compassion; and from this passage we see Five Elements of how to deliberately pursue his Mission with compassion

  1. Deliberately Share the Good News of the Kingdom
    • Wherever You go share the Good News of the Kingdom
    • The trademark of Jesus: everywhere he went, He spoke about the kingdom
    • You don’t have to be preachy, but speak the good news of the Kingdom
    • Jesus went everywhere sharing the Gospel, let us do the same. Let us be marked with this trait of sharing the Gospel
    • Compassion drove him to preach the gospel
  2. Be willing to Heal the Sick (Mark 3:13-15)
    • As you make the disciples, you will be confronted with the challenges of humanity. Most of them you will not solve, but be willing to pray for them.
    • Jesus charged the Church to preach the gospel, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers,  cast out demons and at times raise the dead (Math. 10:8; Luke 10:9)
    • Jesus prayed for the sick everywhere he went, let us do the same. Not everyone will be healed, but pray anyway.
    • Be marked with the compassion to pray for the sick, despite that some will not be healed. Doctors don’t quit their jobs just because some patients don’t get well.
    • As you find the sick, offer prayers. Wherever you go, volunteer pray for every situation
  3. Develop the Compassion of Jesus
    • Compassion for souls is the driving force for sharing the Goodnews of the kingdom.
    • Jesus had strong compassion for people because he saw them in certain way.
    • People without Christ, are harassed and helpless, they are like sheep without a shepherd (Math. 9:36)
    • People without Christ are blind, walking in darkness, bound by sin and harassed by the devil (Acts 26:18)
    • To have the compassion of Jesus, we must see people as Jesus saw them.
  4. Recognize that the Harvest is Ready
    • Christ-devoted followers must see the people who have no Christ as a ready harvest for the kingdom
    • Readiness of the harvest is defined by God and not us.
    • Notice Jesus did not describe difficulties of harvesting; but the reality of the readiness of the harvest.
    • Recognize that the harvest of the is Plentiful, that is why local churches should not scramble for the harvested crop.
    • Recognize the harvest, have the compassion for the Souls
  5. Pray that God Send Laborers (Harvesters)
    • Notice that Jesus did not pray for the ripeness of the crop. He prayed for the increase of the harvesters
    • As You share the Gospel of the Kingdom, Pray that you be multiplied
    • Winning Souls and Discipling believers is the process of multiplying laborers.
    • As You will others and show them how to win, our prayers for the harvesters will be answered
    • Multiplying laborers is increasing and devolving compassion every where

Altar Time

  • Pray that we see people as Jesus sees them
  • Pray that we be baptized with the compassion of Jesus
