In 2021, a military coup in Guinea removed President Alpha Condé from power, highlighting ongoing struggles in the country's move toward democracy. Elections in 2010 and 2015 had initially brought hope, but Condé changed the constitution to extend his time in office, leading to massive protests and a disputed 2020 election, both met with severe crackdowns. Amid a food crisis and rising fuel prices, the military arrested Condé and took control, which many Guineans supported. The future impacts of the coup are still unclear. Meanwhile, the Christian minority and missionaries continue to spread their message of hope in a nation facing poverty and corruption.
- There is a strong need for leadership training for pastors and laymen in Guinea. The country has three Bible schools and six leadership training schools for laymen, but there is still a shortage of leaders, slowing church growth and evangelism. Pastors and leaders also need training to become missionaries. Pray for more dedicated leaders to be raised and trained.
- Despite increased missionary activity, Guinea remains largely unreached, with most of its people groups still being a significant challenge to reach. The dominant groups are Muslim with strong animistic elements. There is a steady number of converts, but much prayer is needed for a major breakthrough.
- Unreached Key People Groups:
- Malinke: SIM, CMA, EPEG, and Lutherans are focusing on this group. Efforts include radio ministry and worship music, with a few Malinke churches now established. Pray for new strategies and greater responsiveness.
- Fulbe (Futa Jalon): Strongly Muslim and custodians of Islam in West Africa. Missions like CRWM, CMA, CAPRO, WEC, IMB, AoG, and the Swiss AME are working here. Efforts include radio broadcasts, audio resources, the New Testament, and development projects. Pray for effective cultural approaches to sharing faith.
- Susu: There are a few believers and small churches in Conakry and nearby regions. Efforts by CMA, CAPRO, WEC, and others include translating the New Testament and recording audio Scriptures. Pray for effective distribution.
- Young People's Ministry:
- With 43% of the population under age 15, youth ministry is vital. Organizations like Cru, YWAM, and IFES are active, with ministries in many cities. Sports ministry, especially football, is proving effective. Pray for the Spirit to draw young people to Christ.
- Missions and Cooperation:
- Since 1981, EPEG/CMA have welcomed new evangelical agencies, working together as AEMEG. Pray for close fellowship among agencies and national churches. Guinea requires dedicated pioneer missionaries. Pray for strength, health, and perseverance for missionaries, and for more to be called, especially to Muslim groups. Also, pray for national believers to become more involved in missions
